WanderSafe Co-Founder and CEO Stephenie Rodriguez joined the Business Essentials Podcast for a conversation about the journey behind WanderSafe — from the personal experiences that sparked the idea to the technology partnerships that brought it to life.
The Origin Story
Rodriguez shared the story of how WanderSafe began: a response to real-world safety gaps that existing technology was not addressing. As a frequent traveler and entrepreneur, she experienced firsthand the vulnerability that comes with being in unfamiliar environments — and recognized that millions of people around the world shared that experience daily.
"The idea was simple," Rodriguez explained on the podcast. "If you are in trouble, you should be able to signal for help instantly — without fumbling with a phone, without making a call, without having to explain where you are. The technology to do that exists. Someone just needed to put it together in a way that works for real people in real situations."
Building with the CIA's Best
A significant portion of the conversation focused on the collaboration with Thomas Pecora, a retired CIA counter-terrorism and security expert who served as WanderSafe's Safety Expert in Residence. Pecora brought decades of operational experience to the product design process, ensuring that the WanderSafe Beacon incorporated best-practice safety techniques used in professional security operations.
"Thomas understood something that most consumer product designers miss," Rodriguez said. "In a real emergency, fine motor skills fail. Cognitive function degrades. You cannot rely on someone to unlock a phone, open an app, and tap three buttons. The response has to be automatic — one action, immediate result."
That philosophy shaped the Beacon's core design: a single physical activation that triggers a 140dB DHAL deterrent alarm while simultaneously broadcasting the user's GPS location to emergency contacts through the companion smartphone app.
The Smartphone App
Rodriguez also discussed the WanderSafe smartphone app — a complementary layer of protection available to anyone with a mobile device. The app enables users to:
- Build a personal safety network of trusted contacts - Share real-time location with designated individuals - Activate voice-triggered SOS through Siri or Google Assistant - Access safety resources including local emergency numbers and travel advisories
The app works independently of the Beacon hardware, making personal safety accessible to users who may not own the physical device.
From Product to Mission
The podcast conversation moved beyond product features into the broader mission driving WanderSafe. Rodriguez spoke about the company's commitment to reaching vulnerable populations — domestic violence survivors, shift workers, students abroad, seniors living alone — and the principle that safety technology should be available to everyone, not just those who can afford premium solutions.
"We are not building a gadget," Rodriguez said. "We are building an ecosystem. The Beacon, the app, the community network, the enterprise partnerships — they all serve the same purpose: making it possible for anyone, anywhere, to get help when they need it."
