According to the World Broadband Speed League ranking from U.K. analyst Cable, the African island of Madagascar has some of the fastest internet speeds in the world. At 24.9 megabits per second, Madagascar’s internet is more than twice as fast as the global average. With the 22nd fastest internet in the world, Madagascar’s speed outpaces France, the U.K., and Canada.
The high speeds are due to the creation of the East African Submarine Cable System. The underwater fiber-optic cable stretches from Sudan to South Africa. But even with the incredible speeds, it may be difficult to connect in Madagascar. It’s estimated that only two percent of the population has internet access on the island country.
In terms of hyperconnectivity, your best bet is Singapore. The city-state has the fastest internet connection in the world and 82 percent of residents have access to it.
Scandinavian countries rounded out the fastest contenders. Sweden, Denmark, and Norway (in that order) boast pure fiber connections, giving residents and visitors some of the world’s fastest connections.
The U.S. comes in 20th for internet speed, meaning there are 19 other countries on this planet (including Belgium, Japan, and Spain) where you will be pleasantly surprised by the amount of time it takes to download something.
